How interpreter pricing is calculated

When you need an interpreter, several factors affect the price. The cost depends on whether you require online, in-person, or telephone interpreting. It is then influenced by any travel time, the duration of the interpreting session, and the language involved.

If you contact us, we will provide you with a quote — interpreter services typically cost between DKK 500 and DKK 1,500 per hour, excluding VAT.

What type of interpreting do you need?

Before contacting us, it’s helpful to consider whether you need the interpreter physically present, whether telephone interpreting will suffice, or whether you have video equipment available.

The price may vary depending on the solution you choose, and if the language you require is less common, video or telephone interpreting may be the only option if the nearest interpreter is located far away. Most interpreting assignments handled by Legalisering.dk involve in-person interpreting.

When you need an interpreter on site

If you require an interpreter to attend in person, this is referred to as on-site interpreting. In this case, you will need to provide the geographical and physical details of the assignment.

On-site interpreting is often used for commercial meetings or meetings with public authorities, including legal matters, as well as medical appointments.

Prefer online? Video interpreting is an option

With video interpreting, you can easily connect with an interpreter remotely. When the session takes place, you can use your preferred meeting platform, and the interpreter will join accordingly.

Please note that video interpreting requires allowing time for the interpreter to translate after each participant has spoken a few sentences.

Many of our clients choose video interpreting when logistics would otherwise result in long travel times for the interpreter. Video interpreting is also commonly used for less widely spoken languages, including many Asian and African languages.

Book a telephone interpreter

It is possible to book a telephone interpreter at short notice, making this a very popular solution. Telephone interpreting is also often preferred for short sessions, particularly when the duration is under 30 minutes.

What is the difference between consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, and whisper interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting is a summarised (not always word-for-word) interpretation of what a participant has just said, typically after a few sentences. Simultaneous interpreting is a continuous, real-time interpretation into the target language as the speaker talks. In whisper interpreting, the interpreter quietly whispers the translation directly to the listener.

Consecutive interpreting (most commonly used)

Consecutive interpreting is the most commonly used interpreting method. During consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens to what is being said and then conveys it to the recipient as accurately and in as much detail as possible. This form of interpreting requires allowing time for the interpreter to relay what has been said.

Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is typically used for conferences. The interpreter translates at the same time as the speaker is talking. This type of interpreting often requires interpreting equipment.

Interpreters who perform simultaneous interpreting have specialised training, as this method requires a high level of concentration. Interpretation is always into the interpreter’s native language, and each interpreter works for a maximum of 15 minutes at a time. If the session lasts longer than 30 minutes, another interpreter must take over. For full-day assignments, several interpreters are required.

The equipment usually needed includes a headset with microphone for the interpreter, headphones for listeners, and possibly an interpreter booth or enclosed room.

Whisper interpreting

With whisper interpreting, the interpreter whispers the translation into the ear of the participant who needs assistance. This is often recommended when only one person requires interpretation.

Preparation fees

In most cases, preparation before an interpreting assignment is not required. Preparation may include the interpreter arriving 15 minutes early to familiarise themselves with the venue. This time will be charged (and you will be informed in advance).

For complex topics requiring specialised knowledge, the interpreter must prepare in advance. Preparation is typically charged at half the hourly interpreting rate.

Important information about transport

When booking an on-site interpreter, travel time to and from the location must be considered. A maximum of 30 minutes of travel time is charged, at half the hourly interpreting rate.

Important information regarding cancellation

If an interpreting assignment is cancelled, 50% of the interpreting fee will be charged. If the cancellation is made more than seven days in advance, there is no cancellation fee.

Evening and weekend interpreting

If interpreting begins before 08:00, a higher rate applies until 08:00. If interpreting continues after 17:00, a higher rate applies for the time after 17:00.

Weekend assignments (from Friday at 17:00 until Monday at 08:00) are also charged at a higher rate.

Interpreting for urgent requests

Urgent requests (less than three days’ notice) are treated as rush bookings. We prioritise these assignments to ensure they can be completed, which typically results in a 50% surcharge. This will always be communicated in advance.

Cancellation of an interpreter booking

We offer flexibility. When booking an interpreter, you may cancel your assignment up to five business days before the scheduled date.

If the interpreting assignment is cancelled within five business days of the scheduled date, the full amount will be invoiced.
